Boy bitten by lizard

I adore Carravaggio, he is one of my favorite artists.

This is one of my favorite paintings of his, it is so full of sexuality, and symbolism, I love it.

The sad death of tapes...

Im so sad that tapes are no more.

I love them!
I am not embarressed to admit that I used a tape walkman right up to 2 years ago when someone bought me an ipod (till then I was carrying round about 10 tapes in my bag!)

There is something comfortable and familiar about tapes, they are what I grew up with, my first ever album was on tape (Micheal Jackson- Bad) and I rememeber how excited I was when I got my first free tape with Smash Hits.

I made mix tapes (and recieved a few from boyfriends and friends) and I used to sit with my finger hovering over the record button, listening to the radio, wiating for my favorite song to come on.
I still have loads of old tape recordings of 90's pirate radio from my yoof, possibly even a few shout outs from me!

I know that people argue that the sound quality is bad, they had a tendency to get chewd up in the machine and there was the whole rewinding and fast-forwarding issue,
but Im a child of the 80's! how could I not love them?!

worry

I'm stressing about stupid things that don't matter and that I cant change.
I don't know why, but Ive always been the kind of person who over-analyses stuff, and worry, worry worry about things that no one noticed or if they did, forgot about ages ago... COS IT WASN'T A BIG DEAL!!!!

I need to get me some Guatemalan worry dolls

Back with the rents

planning my life at the moment.
It very hard making life decisions and sticking to them.

After talking over and over about travelling and giving up my boring-ass job, I finally took a large jump into the deep end and set a rough date to go travelling.

Ater doing lots of maths, I have made the decision to movbe back in with my parents (where I havent lived since I was 18) In Jan to save money.
Whats more, JW (my boy) is coming with me.

My parents are very liberal and chilled people, but its gonna be really weird for a bit whilst we are there.

Portait of Rudolf Agricola

Came across this painting today,
It reminds me of when I was a kid; if I made a mistake, I would paint over it in black and make it into a scarf or something.

He makes me think of a vulture ( I think it's the nose!)

Mary ellen mark

Really disturbing but interesting photographs by Mary Ellen Mark.
Poor animals eh?
But I kind of have sympathy for the sad looking people as well.

Le geek c'est chic

I went to see a 3D version of UP, a real tear-jerker of a Disney movie.

As a child of the 80's 3D has always been really exciting, I remember thinking as a kid, that all movies should be made 3D, and I guess thats what's starting to happen now.
They gave us the silly glasses, which we had a good laugh about.

They look nothing like the old skool ones, and are more like geek glasses, so I nicked some (naughty, I know) and cut out the middle to make some geek chic!

The knight, the young girl and death

I spotted this very strange painting today,
It's quite horrible to look at, but actually drew me in.
It's a man on a horse, trying to keep a grip on a presumably dying girl, who is being dragged back by death.
Disurbingly, death is holding on to her determinedly with its teeth. It's holding on to the stump of a tree and had it's bony leg stretching across the painting to prop his foot on another stump for support.
Its looks like it's painted from memory and not from life, as the horse is really out of proportion.
I really don't like it, but it made me stop and look.

Tiny dancer- 'you are home'

Tiny dancer just came up on shuffle on my ipod ,

An ex of mine a million years ago put it on a mix tape (remember them?!) for me and Ive loved it ever since...
There is a great scene in 'Almost famous' which is a wicked film, where everyone is really pissed off with each other and it comes on and they all sing along...

brown tape art

Just read about this artist, who creates these really interesting images with brown tape and a light box...

Dead flapper

Halloween was fun, I ended up as a dead flapper; when I arrived and there was fake blood to play with!
I put a line on my forehead under my headband dripping down... v gruesome,
Im still struggling to get it off, lots of make up remover later my right eyebrow is still looking a bit pink!
I drank a loooooot of red wine, so I spent the whole of sunday hung over on the sofa.

Friday, 30 October 2009

ok, so I know what I'm going as for halloween...

A 1920's flapper girl!

I even managed to dig out a cigarette holder that I bought years ago, so I can smoke in style!

Sniff sniff sniff

I have a horrible cold at the moment.
I just feel awful, and want to be in bed all day :(
I'm pretty heavily medicated, (can you OD on strepsils?!) but back at work.

People were edging away from me on the tube this morning, and I'm trying not to breathe on anyone.
I don't think I have swine flu- but how do you know?!

Jan Theodore Toorop

ICA last night

I went to the ICA last night for the 'real people do the catwalk' event.

There was a catwalk show with models of all sizes, ages and ethnicities, then a debate about the 'size-zero' issue.
There were lots of interesting points made, although sadly, I think that there isn't much you can do to change the attitudes of some people in the fashion industry, but as the point was made last night, it stretches further than that;
All through the media we are shown images of the way we should look, and bombarded with skinny, tanned white girls as our role models.
Magazines declare women too fat, then too thin, then back again. Not only is it unhealthy, but also really confusing as to what is 'expected of us'.
Its also sad that straight men are shown these unreal images of women, that none of us can live up to, and it becomes what they are attracted to.
We all need to love the differences between us, life would be boring if we all looked the same!

I think that models should be real, diverse and overall...healthy.

Budapest

Back to work after my break in v.cold but lovely Budapest.
There was a biting icy wind when we were there, but thankfully we had a lovely thermal pool and spa to come back to in the hotel.
I loved the architecture in the city, but I wasn't a massive fan of the food
way too meat-heavy for a veggie!)

Sad to be back!

The garden of Pere Lathuille

This painting caught my eye today, funny because it's all about eye contact.
I love the way the man is looking intensely at the woman, as she rather snootily looks back
and how the waiter has eye contact with the viewer.
